POSITION OVERVIEW

MTI Motion is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer for new power electronic designs, circuit designs and component selection for new and existing electric motors, drives, generators and actuators. This individual would work on multiple projects in a cross-functional team environment to support new product development (NPD) and production. You would interface directly with customers to understand their specification/needs and determine the best solution.

The ideal candidate will approach the solutions to optimize system performance and be capable of leading a project through the design/development process through to production. The candidate would take direction from customers, a project manager and engineering management but needs to be capable of managing the day-to-day work on his/her own.

This role could include growth into motor magnetic modeling, analysis and design activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Highly skilled at converting customer requirements into electrical solutions.
  • Self-starter, able to design an electrical circuit/device while maintaining project schedule deadlines. Organizing project activities per the phase-gate process and communicating additional needs to the team.
  • Circuit modeling and component selection for high-reliability and high-temperature applications. Layout skills a plus.
  • Work with the customer to define and refine their specifications based on physical requirements, electrical requirements and practical limitations.
  • Design for MIL-STD-461 requirements and ESD protection.
  • Revise electrical designs and schematics per test data and observations.
  • Perform thermal and duty-cycle analysis.
  • Assess, recommend replacement components and/or redesign for obsolescence issues.
  • Experienced with troubleshooting various electrical issues.
  • Participate in floor operations to aid manufacturing, testing, rework and troubleshooting activities.
  • Brainstorm and work collaboratively with the NPD and Production teams as the engineering design lead or in a design support role.
  • Participate in cost-reduction activities, component evaluations and other manufacturing initiatives to support continuous improvement.
  • Occasional regional and international travel is required (up to 20%).

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree is required. MSEE and/or power electronics is a plus.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in design, prototyping and development with a strong emphasis in the design and manufacturing processes, including but not limited to work instructions, project launches of electromechanical machines.
  • Knowledge of AC/DC motor, solenoid and actuator controls.
  • Experience with resolvers, encoders and other feedback devices.
  • Highly skilled at converting customer requirements into electro-mechanical solutions.
  • Experience specifying and designing hall effect arrays and various associated electronics and circuity.
  • Understanding quality requirements and how products will be validated based on detailed drawing specifications/tolerances to implement them into the machine design.
  • Highly adept at organizing projects from initial directives through fabrication, assembly, QC, prototyping and initial production.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills including intermediate skills with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Self-starter attitude with attention to detail and a deep desire to problem solve.
  • Willingness to collaborate and implement others’ ideas with the purpose of designing the best system for the customer.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and flexible to changing business demands.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in aerospace or defense industries.
  • Hands-on electric motor, solenoid and electromechanical design experience.
  • Previous experience designing some, or all, of the following machines: PMDC, BLDC (BPM), AC induction (single- and three-phase), AC permanent magnets, and synchronous. MotorCAD or SPEED magnetic modeling software experience is strongly preferred.
